- Names and dates from Bruce Burton's "John Pleasant Burton family genealogy, 2001 revision," which incorporated information from Nellie Knox's history as well as organized original research.
Other research from Bob Burton of Gainesville, interspersed with others. It appears that the service record attributed to John Pleasant Burton and retained by the DAR for many years is really for another John Burton who lived in Accomack Co., VA. John Pleasant Burton probably served closer to home:

"Montgomery County, Virginia--circa 1790," by Schreiner-Yantis, 1972:
John Burton paid tax June 24, 1789 and Oct. 23, 1789. The author thought it was likely that this John turned 21 in 1789. [If it was this John, that is 10 years after his real DOB]. His residence in Oct. 1789 was "Grassy Creek, Fox Creek, N side New River" and his neighbors were Daniel Blevins, Elisha Blevins, John Blevins, Patrick Kelley, Robert OSBORNE, Micajah Pennington, George Real, George REAVES, Canada RICHARDSON, Ezekial Young. At p. 103 of this book, John was "in the 1788 [tax] lists but not in 1789."

1799: Ashe Co., NC formed from Wilkes. Watauga was formed from Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell & Yancey in 1849. Alleghany was formed from Ashe in 1859.

1/30/1806: John Burton Sr enters 100 acres in Ashe Co on Rock Creek; border: begins on Jesse Reves' line and runs "various courses". Recorded in Ashe Co, NC Land Entries 1800-1809, page 049.
1810: J. Burton (M>45) appears as head of a family in Ashe Co, NC census, page 010. Also enumerated are F26-45,3M16-26,2M10-16,3M<10,F<10. Stamper families are next door neighbors.
1815: John Burton appears in Capt. Williams District in Ashe Co, NC Tax Digest, owning 350 acres. William Burton (100 acres) and Allen Burton (300 acres) also appear in this district. Appearing in Capt. Maxwell's District are numerous Stamper families, William Reaves (1,850 acres), Richard Burton (250 acres), Hutch Burton (250 acres). Another John Burton appears in Capt. Weaver's District, owning 250 acres on South Fork (area located in present-day Alleghany Co, NC just southwest of the Town of Piney Creek). William Reaves (30 acres) also appears in this district.
1820: John Burton Sr. (M>45) appears as head of a family in Ashe Co, NC census, page 004. Also enumerated are F26-45,2M16-26,M16-18,2M10-16,F10-16. Stamper families are on pages 24-26. There is another John Burton on page 022.
8/9/1824: John Burton, of Lawrence Co, IN, received Federal Land Certificate No. 645, for 94 acres for the east half of the west half of north fractional Section 15, in Township 3N, of Range 1W (land located about 2-3 miles SW of the present-day Town of Mitchell), in the district of Vincennes and State of Indiana.
John and his whole family migrated to Lawrence Co., IN, in 1826.
1830: John Burton Sr (M60-70) appears as head of a family in Lawrence Co, IN census, page 102. Also enumerated are F50-60, 2M20-30 (Eli & Isom), F<5.
