Inscription: JAMES H. BEEGLES 1836 - 1928 James H. Beegles was born in Tennessee, May 29, 1836 and died at his home in East Lynne, Mo., Friday, October 12, 1928, at the age of 92 years, 3 months and 13 days.
Mr. Beegles came with his parents to Missouri in 1840, and grew to manhood in and around East Lynne. He was a soldier in the confederate Army and took an active part in the Battle of Morristown, that historic conflict in Cass County which took place near the town now known as Freeman, being severely wounded. The "Democrat" carried a story of that battle in an issue in 1925, which its readers will recall.
When 13 years old, Mr. Beegles was converted at a camp meeting at Pitts Chapel, later uniting with the Methodist Church. About 36 years ago he transferred his membership to the Baptist Church, remaining a faithful member to the end. On December 16, 1859, he was united in marriage to Mrs. (Sarah E.) Christene Crays, who died January 11, 1895. On September 19, 1896, he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Burton, a faithful and loyal companion who survives him. Besides his wife he is survived by one brother, Hal (sic - Ransom Hale) Beegles of Eldorado Springs, Mo.; a half-brother, Al Beegles of Drumright, Okla.; a half-sister, Mrs. Famey Hoover of Tulsa, Okla.; nine step-children, thirty-six grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, and other relatives. He was always a real father to his step-children and there was a splendid relationship and a loving spirit in the entire family.
Mr. Beegles was a fine neighbor, a good citizen and was always ready to help anywhere and any time he was needed.
His funeral service was held at his home in East Lynne Saturday, October 13, 1928, being conducted by Rev. S. B. Leatherman. A large crowd of sympathetic friends was in attendance. Burial was in Pitts Chapel Cemetery.
